Joomla! 3.0 is the next major update which is expected to be released in September 2012. Joomla 3.0 will bring some major changes to the present layout and features of Joomla. Joomla 3.0 is a short term support (STS) release which will last for 6 months. Another Long term support (LTS) release coming is Joomla 3.5 expected to be released in September 2013.
Joomla team released the Joomla 3.0 Alpha-1 on July 12, 2012 which is meant for testing purpose only. Much attention has being paid to the user experience (UX) and we should expect a great user interface (UI) and accessibility in the future releases of Joomla 3.0 and Joomla 3.5
In short Joomla 3.0 is going to be an overhaul of the current versions of Joomla and not only the front end but admin panel is being redesigned from top to bottom. Twitter Bootstrap is being used in redesigning by Kyle Ledbetter to make the future versions of Joomla Mobile Friendly. Here you see a how Joomla 3.0 Templates would work on a module device.

There will be also the front end editing features in Joomla 3.0 which will be available when an admin is logged-in. When an admin clicks on the edit button on any item, the item will open in the edit mode.
